Four northern lodges stand in this section, all of them in the north of Sweden. What is built on each site changes from one winter to the next, and some parts are put up in snow and ice and then go. For that reason the entries describe the permanent buildings, the ground around them and the way each place is reached, rather than what the season may hold.

Nutti Sámi Siida runs the Reindeer Lodge near Jukkasjärvi, in Swedish Lapland, as the accommodation side of a Sámi-owned business built around reindeer herding. It is a separate site of that operator rather than a hotel in the village, and it works through the winter season. Rooms are in timber buildings on the land the company keeps its herd on.
The location
The lodge lies outside Jukkasjärvi, a village on the Torne river east of Kiruna, in flat forested country under a low winter sun. Kiruna and its airport are a short drive west. There is little around the site beyond the forest, the river valley and the tracks used to reach the grazing land the herd moves across.
Worth knowing
This is a working site of a herding business, and its winter programme, its buildings and its opening season are set by the operator rather than fixed from year to year. Cold weather clothing matters, and transfers are arranged rather than assumed. Confirm the season, the accommodation and the way you will reach the lodge in advance.

Niehku Mountain Villa

Niehku Mountain Villa was made in a former railway roundhouse at Riksgränsen, on the mountain line that runs between Sweden and Norway. The curved plan of the engine shed still governs the building. The house is small, remote and tied to a season, so both arrival and departure usually depend on the train or on a road that weather can close. Meals and mountain arrangements are organised by the villa rather than found nearby. Settle travel, season dates and what is included well before you go.

What can be done from the site depends entirely on the state of the ice, which is decided by the season and not by the calendar. Cabins are separate buildings, so meals mean walking outdoors. Ask the lodge which buildings are open, and what the ice allows, for your dates.
